Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous American authors of the nineteenth century. He was one of the leaders of the Romantic Movement in the U.S. and also contributed to the horror, science fiction and detective genres. His works are best-known for their mystery and gothic elements. Poe brings to life the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition in The Pit and the Pendulum. A prisoner is put in a dark cell that contains a large pit in the center. Each time he avoids death by one method, he must struggle against another that is employed.
