The Book of Mormon, originally compiled by Mormon, an ancient American prophet, tells the story of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the American continent, including a visit by the risen Jesus. The document was inscribed on plates of gold and buried by Mormon's son Moroni, who, in 1823, revealed their location to Joseph Smith, who translated and published them in 1830. The Book of Mormon is used alongside the Bible and Smith's Pearl of Great Price in teaching and study.
