The American Standard Version of the Holy Bible is a revision of the English Revised Edition of the King James Bible published in 1881. The general intention of the American revisers was to eliminate obsolete, obscure, or misleading terms and to "bring a plain reader more closely into contact with the exact thought of the sacred writers than any version [then] current in Christendom, and . . . prove itself especially serviceable to students of the Word."
