In 321, Constantine won control over the Roman Empire and elevated Christianity to the status of the empire's favored faith. To settle the Arian Controversy, which threatened to divide the church and thus the empire, Constantine convened the Nicaea Council in 325. There, the bishops condemned the teachings of Arius, who held different views on the Trinity and Incarnation. In the end, all but three of approximately three hundred bishops comprising the council signed the Nicene Creed.
