Blaise Pascal was a brilliant seventeenth-century French mathematician, physicist, and moralist. He invented the first mechanical calculator, clarified the concept of a vacuum, and created the studies of probability and projective geometry. Near the end of his life, he devoted his attention to writing on philosophy and religion. His writings influenced later thinkers, including Rousseau, Bergson, and the existentialists.
