Leaves of Grass was published in several editions over the poet's lifetime and was enlarged as his work developed. Whitman wrote the first edition after traveling to New Orleans, St. Louis, and Chicago and experiencing the frontier. Emerson praised the work as "the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet contributed." In this text you will find his moving elegy on Abraham Lincoln, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom?d"; "Pioneers! O Pioneers!"; "I Sing the Body Electric"; and "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking."
