When Synge met William Butler Yeats in Paris, he was persuaded to live in the Aran Islands to find inspiration in the lives of the Irish people and the severe environment of the islands. His time there provided the material for two seminal works of the Irish Renaissance, Riders to the Sea and Playboy of the Western World, which identify him as one of the greatest playwrights of his generation. His time and observations on the islands, where he talked and understood Irish, learned to row a currach, and played music, is recorded in The Aran Islands.
