Deirdre of the Sorrows was unfinished at the time of Synge's death. William Butler Yeats and Synge's wife, actress Molly Allgood, finished the play and presented it in 1910 at the Abbey Theatre. The play is based on an ancient Irish myth about the fulfillment of a prediction that Deirdre would become the most beautiful woman in Ulster and would bring death and great sorrow.
