The Spirit of Laws is the masterpiece of French political philosopher Montesquieu, the founder of comparative politics. He analyzed a variety of political institutions, dividing them into three categories: republics, monarchies, and despotisms. In addition, he advocated a separation of legislative, executive, and judicial powers, following the English model. This work would later influence the English Declaration of the Rights of Man and the United States Constitution.
