One of John Locke's most influential works, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding was first published in 1689 and is one of the principal sources of empirical philosophy. His main purpose in writing the essay was to examine the powers of the human mind. In doing so, he proposed that knowledge is not innate and that ideas are derived from experience. Locke's writings greatly influenced later philosophers such as Hume and Kant, as well as the American revolutionaries.
