Washington Irving's Rip van Winkle is one of the most well-known short stories in American literature. After wandering in the Catskill Mountains, Rip meets a group of dwarves and accepts a drink from them. He falls asleep while sitting under a tree and does not wake for twenty years. Upon awaking, he finds the world has changed and many comedic misunderstandings occur.
