Henry Fielding's comic masterpiece, The History of Tom Jones, follows Tom's story from when he is first found by Squire Allworthy to the period when he must set out on his own. Tom Jones experienced immense success when it was published in 1749, selling ten thousand copies in its first year. It is regarded as one of the first English novels written and as a predecessor to the works of Dickens and Thackeray.
