Agamemnon’s daughter, Iphigenia, has become a priestess of the fertility goddess and huntress, Artemis, who rescued her from being sacrificed by Agamemnon and took her to Tauris. The Tauri have a custom of sacrificing strangers. Orestes arrives to snatch the image of Artemis as penance for killing his mother, and Iphegnia is ordered to sacrifice him. Unable to commit such an act, they devise a plan, fool the king of Tauris, and escape with the idol.
