"The Arabian Nights" is a collection of ancient fairy tales from Asia, Arabia, and Persia. Andrew Lang shortened the stories somewhat and left out obscure references and what he determined to be "very dull and stupid" additions to the stories made by various translators over time. The stories are told by Sheherezade to the brutal Sultan Schahriar, who, every evening, married a new wife and had her strangled the next morning. Sheherezade hopes to deliver the people from this terror by changing the Sultan's heart through her stories. "The Seven Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor" and "Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp" are just two of the stories she tells the sultan.
