William Butler Yeats was instrumental in the Irish revival and the founding of the Irish National Theatre and the Irish Academy of Letters. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature primarily for his theatre pieces, but he is best known as one of the great poets of the twentieth century. An excerpt from “The Coming of Wisdom with Time” (1910) follows: Though leaves are many, the root is one; Through all the lying days of my youth I swayed my leaves and flowers in the sun; Now I may wither into the truth.
