Published in 1902, The Heart of Darkness is Joseph Conrad's most well-known short novel. The protagonist, Marlow, tells the story of his journey into the heart of the Belgian Congo to find a white trader named Kurtz. Along the way, he reflects on the nature of mankinds' value and sees the brutality of European colonialism. This story is one of the most discussed texts in postcolonial literary studies and was the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War-era film, Apocalypse Now.
