A Victorian scientist invents a time machine and travels to the year 802,701 A.D. There, he meets the Eloi, a group of dwarf-like creatures that descended from humans. They appear to live in a utopian society, where poverty does not exist and everything is peaceful. This illusion is shattered, however, after he meets the Morlocks, another race that descended from humans, who dwell in underground tunnels. The Time Machine, published in 1895, is regarded as one of the masterpieces of science fiction literature and won Wells immediate recognition.
