Written by Sir Thomas More, Utopia ("no place") is one of the most influential works of Western philosophy. The speculative essay focuses on a traveler, Raphael Hythloday, who searches for the best possible existing form of government and discovers it on an island named Utopia. In Utopia, wealth, nobility, and currency do not exist, property is held communally, and goods are distributed equally. More?s concept of an ideal society influenced later philosophers, notably Karl Marx, and its antithesis, dystopia, was explored by authors such as Aldous Huxley and George Orwell.
