Harriet Beecher Stowe, the daughter of a strict Calvinist preacher, wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin after learning about life in the South and the cruelty of slavery. The novel was first published in the abolitionist newspaper The National Era. Uncle Tom is a devout slave sold to the sadistic Simon Legree, who kills Tom while attempting to beat information out of him about the whereabouts of two women slaves.
