Charles Dickens was a critic of the social stratification and poverty that was prevalent in Victorian society. Written in 1854, Hard Times strikes at the horrible working conditions in the factories and criticizes utilitarianism. One of the main characters, Thomas Gradgrind, raises his children, Tom and Louisa, with utilitarian principles, only to realize his mistake after he sees the unhappiness that he has caused them.
