The Allegory of the Cave is in Book VII of the Republic, Plato's famous discussion of justice and the ideal state. Plato uses a dark cave in which shadows cast on its walls are perceived as realities as an allegory for the human mind that chooses to believe perceptions are realities rather than strive for knowledge of the world and wisdom.
