Alejandro Magariños Cervantes' Caramurú was the first Uruguayan gaucho novel. It is an epic novel set in Uruguay and a testimony to American wars of the 19th century. Caramurú Guarani means "long thing" and applies to the eel. The main character of this novel has this nickname and is the son of an Indian and a Spaniard. Trapped in a conflict of identity he embarks on an epic quest for justice. The story is very swift and manages to fit a story of romantic love in a plot full of political vicissitudes.
