La Danse pieuse Fuite au nord La symphonie pathétique Mephisto Le Volcan Le premier roman de Klaus Mann, La Danse pieuse (1926), fait scandale, par sa thématique homosexuelle. Tandis qu'en Allemagne, le nazisme étend son ombre, le fils aîné de Thomas Mann rejoint les Pays-Bas. Il est déchu de sa nationalité allemande et publie successivement Fuite au Nord (1934), La symphonie pathétique (1935) et Mephisto (1936), un roman de combat critiquant les intellectuels allemands accommodés au nazisme. En 1939 paraît Le Volcan, chronique plus ou moins romancée de l'émigration allemande aux quatre coins du monde. Klaus Mann laisse une œuvre singulière, attachante, et d'une magnifique force intellectuelle.
