Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, affectionately known as simply Jackie, is an icon for the ages. Her grace, beauty, style, intellect, and charm combined to create a truly magnetic appeal to young and old, men and women, close acquaintances and political leaders. Clark Clifford, a respected lawyer and advisor to the Kennedy administration, wrote her the following note after she returned from an official trip abroad: “Once in a great while, an individual will capture the imagination of people all over the world. You have done this; and what is more important, through your graciousness and tact, you have transformed this rare accomplishment into an incredibly important asset to this nation.” Jackie reigned effortlessly in the global world of power and wealth as the wife of a US president and later as the wife of a Greek shipping magnate. Yet her primary goal in life was to be a good mother to her children, Caroline and John. She successfully shepherded them through the political tumult of the 1960s and the loss of their father and uncle, Bobby Kennedy, always in the glare of public scrutiny that fueled the ever-present paparazzi.
