Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley in 1818, is one of the most well-known Gothic novels. After discovering how to animate matter, Frankenstein creates a being that possesses extraordinary strength and size, but has a frightening appearance. Shunned by people and suffering from loneliness, the creature asks Frankenstein to make a female companion. When Frankenstein refuses, the monster goes on a murderous rampage and eventually ends its own life.
