The death of an actress exposes a secret network that traffics identities—and lives On a crisp winter night, glamorous actress Maia Stevens is killed in a car accident. Alone in her car, her body burns to ash. But before long, Michael Reiss in the New York City Chief Medical Examiner’s Office discovers a number of strange inconsistencies. At first he suspects foul play, but he soon discovers that the body recovered from the car didn’t belong to Maia Stevens at all.   If Maia didn’t die in the car crash, then where is she? And who is the victim? Under pressure from the Center for Rehabilitative Medicine to keep his findings a secret, Michael begins to suspect that something sinister is at play, something larger than a single faked death.
