In this absorbing memoir, Gene Boyce chronicles his journey from Depression-era rural North Carolina, Wake Forest University law school, and law practice to his role as an assistant chief counsel on the Senate Watergate Committee, chaired by Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr. (D-NC). He describes the committee's use of the Library of Congress computer to store and analyze its testimonies and documentary evidence--the first for a congressional investigation-- the committee's investigation of Special Counsel to the President Charles Colson, and the discovery of the White House taping system--a development that shook the country. Boyce also discusses his work as lead counsel in monumental class-action lawsuits brought against the State of North Carolina for unlawful taxation and what it took to win these protracted litigations--the largest class-action suits in the state's history. This memoir provides deep, firsthand insight into some of the Watergate scandal's most essential evidence, as well as the life of an indomitable North Carolina attorney.
