"Armino" was composed in the period from Sept. 15th to Oct. 14, 1736, and was first performed at Covent Garden on the 12th of Jan. 1737. The libretto is older, and is said by Burney to have been used in 1714 on the London stage for another composition. At the beginning of the second act, Handel wrote before the lines of music "Violino I, II, III and Viola," but the conducting score written out by Smith has Violino I, II, Viola I, II. We have followed Handel. The difference is of little importance for the performance.
