Primary Source Fluency Activities: Expanding & Preserving the Union

Featuring letters, speeches, songs, and poems, including Waiting for the Pony Express and Grant's Memoirs, this book uses primary sources and activities to help teach important fluency strategies. Students will discover the stories of such pivotal figures as Harriet Tubman, Lewis and Clark, Abraham Lincoln, and Sitting Bull. Developed by Dr. Timothy Rasinski, these activities are designed to develop fluent and meaningful oral reading, as well as vocabulary and word decoding skills. Each text includes a history connection, a vocabulary connection, and extension ideas to meet the diverse needs of every student in the social studies classroom.
