This survey of the field of Cognition is designed for upper level psychology students. It is different from other texts on cognition in several ways. The first is the overall conceptual structure of the presentation: cognition can be illuminated by organizing the material around the idea of the use of knowledge in carrying out the various cognitive processes. This overarching structure leads to a more specific organizing factor: the book is structured around memory and related concepts. This book is significantly different from most texts in several other ways as well, including (1) functional approach; (2) distributed presentation of historical material; (3) an integration of "classical" and "modern" research; (4) distributed presentation of neurocognitive research; (5) discussion of conscious versus unconscious processing; (6) integrative rather than exhaustive presentation of research findings; (7) interactive presentation of material.
