The Breaking Through Science (BTS) series is designed to meet the standards of the K to 12 science curriculum of the Department of Education (Dep Ed) in accordance with the reforms that are implemented in basic education. The BTS series encourages pupils to learn actively and develop their thinking skills for constructive science inquiry. To help learners comprehend science concepts and sharpen their thinking skills, the chapters in each book of the series are divided into lessons. The components and their functions in each lesson are as follows: • Objectives make learners aware of what they need to know in the lesson. • Key Words provide a list of the important terms to be learned and understood. • Discover provides stimulating questions to motivate learners to explore the key concepts that are taken up in the lesson. • Invest igate provides hands-on activities to make learners appreciate how theoretical concepts are derived from experimental investigations. • Learn presents and discusses the concepts in the lesson. • Breaking Through Link relates the concepts presented in the lesson with other subject areas and with the world we live in. • Reflect helps learners appreciate and hone their high-order thinking skills by considering actual life experiences in the light of what they have learned. Each chapter consists of the following components: • Take Note summarizes key concepts at the end of each chapter. • Check-up Test provides a variety of examination questions to help learners integrate and apply what they have learned. • Exploring Further challenges learners to investigate further and to apply what they have learned in varied ways. The activities in each lesson are categorized into three ability levels of learning. These three levels are as follows: • L 1—These are basic activities that are within the ability range of all learners. • L 2—These are application activities designed for learners who have mastered the basic concepts and are ready to apply the concepts in practical ways. • L 3—These are challenging activities designed for the learners who have mastered the basic concepts, applied the concepts to real life situations, and are ready to expand their learning experience. With the above components and with this leveling strategy, we hope to engage learners to enjoy breaking through science!
